The community began in the early 1980s as an 80-unit townhome development, built by local homebuilder Mike Herron. The plan was straightforward: eighty homes, each individually owned.
Then the economy turned. A recession arrived just before construction finished and the association was formed. The developer went under — and so did both lenders financing the project, part of the wave of savings-and-loan failures that swept the properties into the hands of the federal Resolution Trust Corporation.
What happened next shaped the neighborhood that stands today. The first twelve units sold at auction to a local investor and became rentals, outside the association. A handful of the earliest individual buyers joined as members. The remaining sixty townhomes were purchased at auction by Kukai Investments, a group based in Honolulu and San Francisco, then remodeled and sold one at a time to owner-occupants under the Affordable Housing Disposition Program.
Those sixty homes came with one condition: membership in the Homeowners Association. Four decades later, they still make up the community that gathers here today.
Invitations are mailed to all members approximately three weeks before the meeting, which is held the second Tuesday in November of each year. Members who would like a copy of the minutes may request one from the association office.
